Abstract In what way does the experience of cyberspace affect the status of subjectivity? In it, the fundamental gap which defines Cartesian subjectivity, the gap between subject (the pure point of negative self-relating) and person (with its wealth of inner self-experience), is articulized in the guise of the gap between the subject and his or her »screen persona«. On account of this gap, the subject’s decenterment is brought to extreme: the subject is deprived even of the most »authentic« phenomenal self-experience - his or her »innermost« attitudes are potentially transposed onto the Other, i.e. one can laugh, cry, enjoy through Another. In this full actualization of the tendency first clearly identified by Marx in his logic of Warenfetischismus (commodities as »social things« which act and believe instead of us), the unexpected liberating aspect of this utter »alienation« also becomes discernible.
