Inside Exile: New Media, Old Assumptions and the Making of Meaning
Abstract
The so-called New Media are rapidly gaining a history which brings with it a rush towards calcification of received ideas. Yet they continue nevertheless to provide an arena for the challenge of old assumptions. In the migration from the known to the unfamiliar, always a process of the making and the unmaking of meanings, practitioners create and at the same time learn from this history, using the new technologies as instruments of inquiry into what we think we know, a necessary scrutiny of the basic epistemology of everyday life. Two key subjects of my own inquiry, the forces and impact of migration and the bureaucratization of experience, converge and find a curious echo in the analog-to-digital media migration. In making this journey we find ourselves thematically and conceptually inside exile, in the non-place of the »Haus der bereiten Türen«, facing the transient's task of watering and cultivating the desert.
