ABSTRACT
Studied interactions between language use characteristics and errors in syllogistic reasoning tasks. Human Ss: 75 normal male and female West German adults (university students) (Study I). 30 normal male and female West German adults (university students) (Study II). In Study I, Ss were asked to solve 72 valid and invalid syllogisms, and (3 days later) to write an essay on a given topic. The essays were analyzed, using the Dogmatismustextauswertung (DOTA) (Dogmatism Text Analysis) procedure by S. Ertel (1972), a measure of cognitive openness and closedness. Correlations between DOTA scores and number of errors on the syllogisms were determined. Study II essentially replicated the procedures of Study I; however, Ss were required to write 2 essays to increase the reliability of the DOTA scores.
